The wise say, “Be like the water lily.  Grow up from the mud, but do not be the mud.”

Often we want to radiate the beauty of the water lily without growing up from the mud because we are afraid of becoming the mud.  We go look at the mud sometimes and admire the water lily, but we prefer to stay comfortable and clean on the sideline.

It is easy for us to talk of justice and to propose beautiful new solutions to the world’s problems without realizing that we are a part of those problems.  To have a pure heart and to stand for justice does not mean that justice will prevail.  Worse yet, it does not mean that we actually hold justice up.  We must look deeply at oursleves within the context of injustice.  Hope lies in our having the courage to challenge ourselves for change.

Be willing to voluntarily get in the mud.  Together with those who are there against their own wills, you can help justice rise above it in a radiant blossom which will bring hope to everyone.

Wonderful reflection Max! I am moved by your words, and knowing that you are one who has repeatedly gone into the mud for the sake of justice, peace, reconciliation and healing, makes these words even more profound.
    Shalom-Salaam my friend.
